SUPPORTING CLUBS THROUGH THE CHANGE CHALLENGE
Change for golf clubs, be it ‘evolution or revolution’, is complex and multidimensional. The professional support delivered by Custodian Golf is exclusively designed to make change possible. Custodian Golf is an independent, multi-disciplinary organisation that harnesses the best business, analytical and management skills in the profession. It began with a desire to fully understand the current situation and take a deep dive into the data of every golfing facility in Great Britain. This created a comprehensive database to unequivocally evidence the issues, providing a baseline for future improvements.
OUR PURPOSE
The sole aim of Custodian Golf is to grow and safeguard the future of the sport, by partnering with clubs to develop innovative solutions. The data examines the trends, challenges and vital solutions that will maximise the potential of clubs. This will enable future generations to enjoy the social interactions, and physical and mental health benefits of golf that proved so vital during the pandemic.
"Many golf clubs were built a hundred years ago, and are steeped in tradition, but the world has changed dramatically since then. Custodian Golf can help to deliver the future of golf for clubs around the country.”
Phil Grice, Head of Venues, Custodian Golf

OUR TEAM
Phil Grice, Head of Venues
Phil is a seasoned golf professional and consultant with a career spanning over three decades. Growing up on a golf course managed by his parents sparked his lifelong passion for the sport, leading him to pursue a professional career in golf.
Phil began his journey as a trainee golf professional in North London, completing a comprehensive three-year PGA course covering business, retail, and coaching, laying the groundwork for his multifaceted career.
Phil gained valuable experience working at prestigious golf facilities, including Silvermere Golf and Country Club and his tenure as owner at Lexden Golf Club. His roles involved teaching, managing operations, and driving business growth, honing his understanding of customer service and the complexities of running successful golf clubs.
Phil has transformed several golf clubs by increasing memberships and improving operational health. At Royal Norwich, he grew the membership from 400 to over 1,000 significantly lowering the average age of members and creating a vibrant, sustainable community. His efforts in relocating and developing the club earned it second place in the World Golf Development of the Year awards.
Beyond his roles at individual clubs, Phil has been influential in the broader golf community. As chairman of the Golf Club Managers Association, he played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, working with government bodies to reopen golf courses and advocating for the sport's safe return. His leadership and strategic thinking have been instrumental in shaping the future of golf management. Phil's philosophy revolves around inclusivity, customer focus, and the long-term health of golf clubs. He passionately believes in engaging younger generations and families, viewing golf as a way to bring people together across different ages and backgrounds. His work often involves restructuring clubs' pricing and operational strategies to enhance member satisfaction and financial viability.
Dedicated to making golf accessible and enjoyable for all, Phil loves coaching new players, especially those who have never held a golf club before, and witnessing their joy when they hit their first successful shot. This passion extends into his consultancy work, where he helps golf clubs realise their potential and achieve sustainable growth.
Phil is also an advocate for modern technology to enhance the golfing experience. He has been at the forefront of integrating tech solutions like driving range screens and launch monitors, making practice sessions more engaging and fun, particularly for younger players.
Phil's vision for Custodian Golf is to work in partnership with golf clubs to help them become community hubs where people engage in various social and business activities. He sees the potential for clubs to offer excellent hospitality, meeting spaces, and networking opportunities, creating a community atmosphere that extends beyond just playing golf. Through Custodian Golf, Phil aims to redefine what it means to be a successful golf club in the 21st century. His approach is rooted in inclusivity, sustainability, and community, ensuring that golf remains a thriving and beloved sport for generations to come.

Alasdair Rae, Head of Data
Alasdair is a distinguished former academic and seasoned consultant with a multifaceted career in urban studies, planning and data analysis. Born and raised in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, Alasdair developed an early passion for golf.
Alasdair obtained a Master's degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio – a city known for its rich golfing heritage, not least because it is the home town of Jack Nicklaus. He later returned to the UK to pursue a PhD at the University of Liverpool, focusing on urban and regional policy. His doctoral work combined complex statistical analysis and mapping, laying the foundation for his future career in academia and consulting.
Alasdair has held academic positions at several institutions, including the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield, where in 2017 he was promoted to Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. His academic work emphasised the importance of data analysis and mapping in understanding cities and regions, a theme that permeated his subsequent consulting work.
In 2019, Alasdair transitioned from academia to full-time consulting, leveraging his data analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) expertise to advise various high-profile clients, including the United Nations Development Programme, Google and the BBC.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alasdair is a former basketball player, having represented Scotland in international competitions as well as winning the Scottish League and Cup. This athletic background complements his enduring passion for golf, a sport which blends his professional interest and personal enjoyment.
Alasdair's vision for Custodian Golf is both ambitious and pragmatic. He seeks to change perceptions about what golf and golf courses can be, advocating for a more open and inclusive approach to the sport. He envisions a future in which golf facilities are seen not just as traditional 18-hole venues but also varied formats that accommodate different lifestyles and demographics. By doing so, he particularly hopes to ensure the sustainability of golf clubs that might otherwise struggle, promoting gradual evolution rather than radical change.
Despite his numerous achievements, Alasdair remains modest, often downplaying accolades such as winning the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s prestigious Bartholomew Globe in 2019. He values the continuous pursuit of new challenges, and never rests on his laurels.

Quote you live your life by: Steve Jobs: "When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money. That's a very limited life.
Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is - everything around you that you call life, was made up by people who were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it."
